A Place for Innovation

This year’s Battelle Bioremediation Symposium is in Austin, Texas. Having grown up in Nashville, it is hard for me to write this, but Austin is the music innovation capital of the world. Austin labels itself the “Live Music Capital of the World,” but that misses its real contribution.

You see, Austin is where Willie Nelson sought refuge after being roughly handled by the music industry in Nashville. He didn’t fit the mold. It’s where Janis Joplin recorded her first song. In the small clubs of Austin, Lucinda Williams honed her skills. Credit goes to the Austin music circuit for bringing together the power trio of guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughn, bassist Tommy Shannon, and drummer Chris Layton.

The Lovin’ Spoonful sang, “… there’s thirteen hundred and fifty-two guitar pickers in Nashville, and they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee ant hill…” but there are only a few that can pick a note that is not picked in Nashville. Those are the notes picked in Austin: a place that openly accepts and encourages innovation.

Imitations may be the sincerest form of flattery, but tomorrow is built on innovation. RPI patented the first use of activated carbon in subsurface remediation. You could say we were initially “roughly handled” by the established remediation product vendors. Over time, the most vociferous distractors became our greatest imitators. But imitation is a bow to yesterday.

CAT 100 and BOS 200+® extend the capabilities of BOS 100® and BOS 200® and broaden the range of contaminants that can be degraded, extend the adsorptive capacity, and increase the biodegradation rate. Both products are pre-conditioned with specific complex carbohydrates, amino acids, nutrients, and proprietary microbes. Each product is innovative in addressing critical issues in remediation. CAT 100 deters the persistence of daughter products in a PCE, TCE application. BOS 200+® can take on LNAPLs.

BOS 200+(R) Technology Application at Active Bulk Storage Facility: A Five Year Review

Trap & Treat® BOS 200®+ was applied using direct push technology (DPT) methods at a former retail gasoline site in Knoxville, TN. Since installation, there has been a 57-99% reduction in total BTEX, a 42-99% reduction in naphthalene, and an average increase of almost 200% in dissolved CO₂  over the project monitoring period. The State of Tennessee issued a No Further Action (NFA) status for the project in 2022.
