Still Got LNAPL? Put BOS 200®+ In Your Toolbox!

We first published today’s photograph more than seven years ago (01/30/2014). At that time, we and our clients began noticing that Trap & Treat® BOS 200® was doing more than simply reducing or eliminating groundwater contamination in monitoring wells. Some head scratching ensued when it was discovered that LNAPL measurements in wells were plummeting and occasionally just going away. While some doubted what the water treatment industry had known for decades, RPI Group research continued to reveal that microbes strip hydrocarbons from activated carbon thereby freeing space for further absorption of contaminants.

While a high level of confidence developed in BOS 200®’s ability to treat “run of the mill” amounts of LNAPL that exist at many sites, further experiments were conducted to determine if BOS 200® could be “tweaked” in such a way that we could recommend its use at highly contaminated sites where LNAPL was a more prominent site condition. In the laboratory, it was discovered that a modification of our proprietary consortium of microbes might be part of the solution. Then we discovered the value of also adding complex carbohydrates and amino sugars to BOS 200®. The additional naturally occurring microbes and new additives produced an increase in aromatic degradation by 23% and alkanes degradation by 15%.

In 2016/2017 RPI Group performed a pilot test using standard BOS 200® at a heavily contaminated site near the U.S. Gulf Coast. Our client authorized full scale implementation based upon the results of the pilot test. Prior to mobilization, the client received a briefing on some of the BOS 200® enhancements we were working on. They liked the idea and what we now call BOS 200®+ was born. I would encourage you to review the Project Summary some four years post-injection. Standard BOS 200® remains our “go-to” for most sites, including sites with sporadic LNAPL present. For nastier properties, we believe that BOS 200®+ is worthy of your consideration. Since this initial project, RPI Group has used BOS 200®+ on nine projects in seven States.
